Testing of Electrical Products under BIS ISI Marking Scheme

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is India’s national standards body responsible for ensuring product quality, safety, and reliability.
Under the ISI Mark Certification Scheme, certain electronic and electrical products must undergo testing and certification before being sold in the Indian market.
This ensures that all products meet the relevant Indian Standards (IS) and are safe for consumers.

What is ISI Mark Certification?

The ISI Mark is a symbol of quality and safety issued by BIS.
Manufacturers of specified products must obtain a BIS license and display the ISI mark on their products.

Newly Added Products under Quality Control Orders (2024–2025)

Under the Safety of Household, Commercial and Similar Electrical Appliances (Quality Control) Orders —
S.O. 4098(E) (20 Sept 2024) and S.O. 2232(E) (19 May 2025) — several additional products now fall under mandatory ISI certification, including

Testing Requirements

Before certification, products must be tested in a BIS-recognized laboratory as per the applicable Indian Standard (IS).

Common testing parameters include:

  • Electrical safety (insulation, leakage current)
  • Temperature rise and endurance
  • Mechanical strength
  • Thermal and environmental tests
  • Labeling and marking checks

Manufacturers must also maintain in-house testing facilities to ensure ongoing quality compliance.

Manufacturing or selling ISI-mandatory products without a BIS license is a punishable offense under the BIS Act, 2016, which can lead to:

Certification Process

  1. Application Submission – Apply online on manakonline.in
  2. Sample Testing – Conduct product testing at a BIS-approved lab .
  3. Factory Inspection –BIS officials verify manufacturing setup and quality control
  4. License Grant – BIS issues a license and CM/L number
  5. Marking – The product is labeled with the ISI mark and license number
